About Us

The Purdue Golden Silks have a long-standing history with the Purdue "All-American" Marching Band. Earlier known as the Purdue Flag Corps, the name was changed in 2001 to the Golden Silks. Regardless of the name change, the Golden Silks have always been a great asset to the marching band, providing color and visual interpretation to every show.

The Golden Silks are a performance-based group. The girls perform with the Purdue Marching Band for every home football game, one away trip, and every bowl trip the football team makes. Each home football game offers numerous performance opportunities. The day begins with a pre-game pep rally at Slayter Center, typically often with a color guard feature performance, along with fight songs to get the crowd fired up. From there, the girls travel to the stadium for the pre-game marching show. The Golden Silks perform exciting halftime and post-game field shows, and conclude the day with a traditional post-game fountain concert at Purdue's Engineering Mall.

Along with football performances, the girls have many other functions with the band. They perform in various parades, including the Lafayette Christmas Parade and the Indianapolis 500 Parade in downtown Indianapolis and other opportunities as they arise.

Choreography for the fall is focused more on flag work and visual impact that will entertain and please the crowd. However, beginning in Fall 2007, the Golden Silks also started incorporating a little rifle work into their football performances.

During the spring semester, the Golden Silks take on a slightly different perspective. New in the Spring of 2007, the Golden Silks performed a winterguard show in exhibition at several IHSCGA winterguard competitions. The Golden Silks entered Independent Winterguard International (WGI) competition in the Spring semester 2008. The winter style of work is a little different from the fall, following a traditional winterguard format, using more body movement, more challenging work, and incorporating rifle and sabre to pre-recorded music. Participation in the fall marching or concert band is required for winterguard participation during the spring semester.
